Volunteer Opportunities
We love our Volunteers! Without our volunteers, some services and programs would simply not happen.
Help Enrich the Lives of Others - Our Visiting Library Service Needs Your Help
Our Visiting Library Service serves those who are unable to come into the library. These individuals are confined to home, hospital or a residential facility due to illness or physical disability. A few hours of your time each month will help us reach those in need.
Using their own vehicles, volunteers deliver library materials throughout the GVPL service area. The service operates from Tuesdays to Fridays mornings. Volunteers should be able to lift and carry bags of books. Volunteers require a valid driver’s license. To assist with vehicle operating costs, the library reimburses drivers 0.48 per kilometre.
Please note that a criminal check, reference checks and an interview are required.
For more information please contact Visiting Library Service at 250-475-6101 or vlscirc@gvpl.ca.
Library Board
Perhaps the highest profile volunteer activity is that of a Board trustee. The GVPL is governed by a Library Board comprising councillor and citizen representatives. Rrepresentatives are appointed by municipal council and can serve for up to 8 years. A Board trustee can attend as many as 30 meetings a year, not including special events and council appearances in support of the Library, and serves without remuneration.
The Friends of the Library
With a membership of almost 300, the Friends keep very busy! Once books are withdrawn from Library shelves they become the property of the Friends of the Library. The Friends make these books available at their book sales, on bookcarts in all branches, or at the Friendshop at the Central Branch. In addition to offering some great bargains, the sales generate enormous goodwill towards the Library. The proceeds from all sales go towards the programs and services of the Library.
A Friends membership is only $10 a year and makes a great gift! New members are always welcome and we can use your talents at the Book Sale, on our Executive Board, or at the Friendshop. If you would like to support the Library and join the Friends or would just like more information, please call the Administration Office at (250) 384-5222 or visit the Friends of the Library Website.
