Volunteer Opportunities

We love our volunteers! Without our volunteers, some services and programs would simply not happen.

Teen Volunteers

Youth Advisory Council (YAC)

Have your voice heard! Teens looking for an interesting volunteer opportunity are invited to join the GVPL Youth Advisory Council (YAC). Work on special library projects, meet other teens, have fun, boost your resume, and earn volunteer hours. If you are new to YAC, please complete a YAC Referral Form and bring it to the first meeting. For ages 13–18.

YAC will meet on the first Saturday of the month from January to June 2012, and this session is currently underway.

Reading Buddies

If you like working with children, enjoy reading, are a fluent English speaker, and want to help emerging readers, we need you! Reading Buddies volunteers mentor children in Grades 1-4 with reading practice, literacy-based activities and fun. We provide training and, upon completion, a reference letter outlining your volunteer hours. If you are a new Big Buddy, please complete a Reading Buddies Referral Form and bring it to the training session. For ages 13-18.

Thank you to all our marvellous volunteers this spring!

Reading Buddies will take place in all full-service library branches this summer.  Registration begins on June 15.

Tech Buddies

Tech Buddies connects teenagers with older adults who want to know more about new technologies.  Use your savvy and skills on Nintendo Wii, computers, and other gadgets such as MP3 players.  You will get to meet new people, practice your teaching skills, and earn volunteer hours. If you are new to Tech Buddies, please complete a Tech Buddies Referral Form and bring it to the training session.  For ages 13-18.

Spring Tech Buddies is currently underway at the Juan de Fuca Branch.

Knit Wits

A fun way to gain volunteer hours and give back to the community -- and learn to knit too! Teens and tweens can earn hours toward the High School volunteer or community service graduation requirement by participating in our Knit Wits program and donating a completed neckwarmer. A letter documenting their hours will be available upon request.

Thanks to all our Knit Wits this year!

Are you one of our Knit Wits? Here are the knitting instructions for you!
