Join us at the Central Branch on January 23rd at 10:00 am to celebrate our Chinese Canadian community, and the Victoria Foundation’s 75 years of inspired giving.

Did you know that the Chinese language collection is the largest World Language collection in the Greater Victoria Public Library system?

In 2011, GVPL received $15,000 from the Victoria Foundation to increase library materials in our library system. Our new expanded Chinese language collection will be officially launched on January 23rd at 10:00 am to celebrate Chinese New Year and recognize the generous support of the Victoria Foundation.

“We are honoured to provide this gift to the Greater Victoria Public Library,” says Sandra Richardson, Victoria Foundation CEO. “There is a 222 year history of Chinese in Canada and Victoria’s Chinese community is the oldest in the country. These new resources in the library system benefit not only Chinese language speakers but everyone in our community.”

“We are so pleased to provide such great materials to our Chinese community,” says GVPL CEO Maureen Sawa.” We thank the Victoria Foundation for their generous gift. Without them we would not be able to provide such a wide range of materials. We are particularly grateful to receive copies for each branch of two NFB documentaries about Chinese Canadians: From Harling Point and Unwanted Soldiers.”

Victoria Foundation celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2011. Since 1936, the generosity and commitment of donors has enabled the Victoria Foundation to fulfill its vision of Connecting people who care with causes that matter®. The connections that the Foundation has with the charitable sector make it the go-to resource centre for community philanthropy, and they allow it to respond to the needs in our community through leadership, stewardship and granting.
