September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, and we encourage everyone to wear orange. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 to promote awareness about the Indian residential school system. In 1973, a six-year-old girl named Phyllis Webstad wore her treasured new orange shirt to her first day at St. Joseph Mission Residential School outside of Williams Lake. The shirt was taken away from her and replaced with a school uniform. Learn more.
